6.      The Mindset of Their Students: You will never be successful in your career until you can put yourself into their mindset. What matters to them? What do they worry about? Why do they care about certain things? You need to see firsthand why kids act the way that they do.

7.      How to Build Relationships: You want to get into the minds of your students and that means that you have to earn their trust. A big part of all of this is to build relationships with them that are lasting and meaningful so that they know they can come to you and count on you.

8.      How to Get Information Out of Somebody: Once you build the relationship you want to be able to pull information out of them. You want to understand what’s going on in their head and why they are acting the way that they are. This can not only help them but others around them as well.

9.      How to Intervene: When there is a problem you have to decide very quickly on the best way to intervene. This means that you have to think fast and be able to act quickly when the need comes up. This isn’t always easy but is crucial to the job.

10. How to Support But Not Interfere Sometimes: There’s a fine line between involvement and support and interfering. If a student feels that you are interfering and doesn’t want you to, then you may lose their trust. You need to see that line and be able to function within it.

Being a counselor takes a lot of hard work. If you can learn how to decipher and master all of these things, you are bound to be successful.
