The guitar and the vihuela were carried to the New World by the Spaniards and the Portuguese, and a host of new forms and rhythm patterns developed. In this chapter, we try playing some of these forms, and practice shaping the rhythms with accented upbeats and damping. We play the tango, the rumba, and the beguine, and then learn some typical chords to practice the bossa nova. Finally we learn a solo, a popular dance form from Peru known as carnavalitos.

The quarter note chords have been marked with a staccato sign marked in the first measure, indicated by the dots below the notes. This means that the chords should be cut off by damping, in this case with the left hand little finger, to give them the dramatic effect typical of this form.

This does not apply to the upbeat eighth note chords which, by contrast, should last their full value, giving a tar-rump effect. The staccato on the single notes shortens the time they are held, but each note starts on its beat as written, i.e, the overall tempo is not changed. The notes simply have a clipped sound.

Most guitarists learn to strum without thinking about what they’re actually doing. A strummed guitar fulfills two functions: one is rhythmic, the other harmonic. The harmonic function is to supply a “wash” of sound relating to a chord, the equivalent of holding a chord on a keyboard. But because the guitar does not have much sustain, the notes will die unless they are struck again. Repeated striking sustains the presence of the chord. The relationship between strumming technique and sustain can be vividly heard on the mandolin, where rapid strumming is required to keep the notes “present”. Violinists solve this problem when they draw a bow across the string, continually exciting it to vibrate.

The rhythmic function has two components: the rhythm with which the chords are produced and the percussive attack (usually produced by a pick) on the guitar strings. Both aspects are important for solo performers accompanying themselves on the guitar. Guitarists working with a rhythm section or recording with a variety of instruments need to realize, though, that they no longer have to carry the whole of the rhythm with their strumming.

Good strumming patterns balance tempo against sustain. At a slow tempo, you hit the strings more frequently because the chords die away. At faster tempos, you might not need to hit them so often, unless like Jimmy Nolan or Nile Rodgers your guitar part is at least as significant for its percussive effect as for its harmonic effect.

The acoustic guitar came to America in the 1850s, thanks mainly to immigrants from Eastern Europe. Guitar maker Christian Friedrich (C. F.) Martin left his native Germany because of dissatisfaction with the restrictive guilds that oversaw all instrument making back home.Meanwhile, factories were built to turn out inexpensive guitars by the dozens, and mail order catalogs like Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward began selling five-dollar instruments.

In the nineteenth century the guitar was promoted as a parlor instrument for young ladies to play. In the time before phonographs and radio, music-making was a favorite amateur activity. Young women were especially encouraged to learn music as an important social skill. While the piano was large and ungainly, the guitar was small and sweet voiced at the time, most guitars were far smaller than today’s jumbo models, and they were all strung with gut strings in the classical style. Because of this, the guitar was thought to be an ideal instrument for young ladies, and it soon became popular.

As stage performers began taking up the guitar in the early twentieth century, they clamored for louder instruments that could fill a concert hall. Guitar makers responded by making bigger guitars; others began experimenting with different shapes for the guitar’s body to improve bass response and volume. The Martin company made an important contribution in the teens with the introduction of their so-called D or Dreadnought guitar. With a wider lower bout (or half of the body), and with construction strong enough to withstand the newly introduced steel strings, the instrument was immediately popular for its loud bass volume and carrying power.

The history of the guitar includes periods of fantastic popularity followed by periods of decline. The eighteenth century proved a time of low ebb for the guitar, until at its end the double strings gave place to single ones, and the sixth string was added to create the familiar form of today’s guitar. Sheep’s gut was used for the first three strings. The basses were formed by winding silver-plated copper wire onto a core of silk thread.

With the sixth string came a new wave of popularity with the public, led and inspired by virtuoso players who also composed and wrote instruction methods for the guitar in its new form. The main centers were Vienna and Paris, and great players such as Mauro Giuliani (1781–1829) from Italy and Fernando Sor (1778–1839) from Spain were drawn to emigrate to the north where enthusiastic audiences and students awaited them. Both composed extensively for the guitar, and laid the foundation for the solo repertoire. Ferdinando Carulli (1770–1841) produced a guitar method that is used to this day, and the “25 Melodious Studies” of Matteo Carcassi (1792–1853) are still part of the standard student repertoire.

Following this great wave of popularity came a period of decline and neglect, and by the middle of the nineteenth century the guitar was little played and rarely heard in concert. It was really thanks to Francisco Tárrega (1852–1909) that public interest was again awakened.

In the Christian era, the guitar is mentioned in two forms in the thirteenth century: the Latin guitar and the Moorish guitar. Both are illustrated in beautiful miniatures in the manuscript “Cantigas de Santa Maria” attributed to Alfonso the Wise of Spain. Of the two, the Latin guitar is closer to the figure-eight shape of the guitar as it developed in Spain and Italy. In early sixteenth-century Spain, the vihuela became the instrument of choice for the serious musician. The vihuela was in fact an early form of the guitar, with six pairs of strings. Vihuela music may be played without alteration on the modern guitar.

The only significant difference was the pairing of strings to produce a stronger sound, comparable to the 12-string guitar of today. The vihuela was played with the fingers, and a considerable repertoire of music existed for it in the notation form known as “tablature.” The tuning was like that of the Renaissance lute, which in the rest of Europe was considered the “King of Instruments” and whose music is now a fertile source for guitarists.

At the same time, a smaller guitar, first with four and then with five sets of strings (known as courses), developed as a less sophisticated instrument for chording and the strumming style known as rasgueado used as accompaniment for the dance.

The first notes to play on your guitar are the ones that get your guitar in tune. Don’t play anything — not a lick, not a rhythm figure — until your guitar is perfectly in tune with itself and the other instruments in the band. Playing out of tune can peg you as an amateur and cause musicians and non-musicians alike to cringe. So learn how to tune your instrument quickly, correctly, and painlessly, and everyone will be happy — especially you.

Basically, you have two ways to tune your guitar:

To an outside reference: These sources include electronic tuners, a tuning fork, a pitch pipe, or another instrument (such as a piano, organ, electronic keyboard, or even a harmonica).

To itself: By using the relative method, you tune all the strings to one string. (This method is covered in the section “Helping your guitar get in tune with itself.”)

In the relative method, your guitar may or may not be in tune with another instrument or concert , but the strings are in tune with each other. Anyone who doesn’t have perfect pitch (which is most of the world, including the world of musicians) won’t know.

Modern technology has made a vast palette of tones available to the electric guitarist. Rock arrangements require a touch of overdrive, distortion or fuzz for an authentic 1960s sound. Remember that distortion tends to soak up frequencies – even on a hard HM track, you may not need as much as you think, let alone as much as is available with most multi-effects processors.

Chorus, delay, flanging and phasing thicken a clean guitar sound and are suitable for rhythm parts. Some of the latest processors offer speaker cabinet, mike placement, vintage amp and guitar simulations to further widen your sound. Synth and MIDI guitars open up a new world of sound triggered from the guitar.

Delay and Counterpoint
Fast delays thicken a sound; longer ones lend depth and interest to lead breaks, even if the delay is quieter than the “dry” signal. Multi-tap echoes allow you to generate rhythms in time with the echo, so it sounds as if there are two guitars playing at the same time. U2’s The Edge is a master of this approach. The live recording Under A Blood Red Sky gives a good indication of how effective this can be. ‘11 O’Clock Tick Tock’ has a guitar part that acts as
counter-melody to the vocal at the same time it outlines the harmony. The Edge’s parts often feature open strings (’I Will Follow’ and ‘Gloria’), and in solos such as the one in ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ he will move up and down a string whilst hitting the adjacent one. ‘Pride’ also features this sound, along with effective harmonics. Songs such as ‘Where The Streets Have No Name’ and ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ are classics of rhythmic playing with delay, where a simple phrase is transformed by the notes bouncing back.

Even the finest acoustic guitars have comparatively short sustain, a factor that has shaped guitar technique. Strumming and fingerpicking are techniques that ensure a wash of sound, and, in the case of fingerpicking, a harmonic backdrop for a melody. To increase sustain, guitarists have experimented with string gauges (heavier strings = more sound), altered tunings and feedback.

A compressor enhances sustain because it boosts the level of a decaying note. Electric players can get extra sustain with distortion and overdrive. The E-Bow is a hand-held gizmo that, when positioned close to the string, produces a sustained note. Fernandes have developed a guitar with a similar sustain device built into it.

You can use the volume control on an electric guitar to do this trick: turn off the volume pot, play a note and then turn the pot up – the note starts out inaudible and fades up. There’s no percussive “click” when the note is struck, and the ear is more conscious of the sustain in the sound. This technique is favoured by country players because it simulates the sound of steel guitar. How easy it is to manipulate the volume pot depends on the physical layout of your guitar. (If it’s difficult or impossible, a volume pedal can be used to do the same thing.) This trick works well with reverb and delay, especially if you come in with a bend, and it can give an expressive quality to chords. Two fine examples of this type of guitar playing are ‘Dreams’ and ‘Well I Wonder’.

Quite a few bands, including Queen and Thin Lizzy, have featured twin-guitar breaks that are carefully harmonized. (Nowadays, intelligent pitch-shifters will allow you to create harmonized lines from a single guitar part.) The standard intervals for such harmonizing are thirds, sixths or octaves, though a few fourths add interest providing that they are in keeping with the harmony.

Examples include the guitar lines on ‘Whisky In The Jar’, ‘Don’t Believe A Word’, ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ and ‘The Dean And I’. Non-harmonized combinations of lead guitars are harder for the ear to keep track of because the focus of attention keeps moving back and forth. As a result, there is built-in unpredictability, and each listen often reveals something never heard before.

The effect of two guitars independently soloing can be heard on Wishbone Ash’s ‘Throw Down The Sword’, Janis Joplin’s cover of ‘Summertime’ (part of which is free form and part of which is arranged), Love’s ‘A House Is Not A Motel’ and in many places on Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs. To try this, set up the track for your solo and record a take. Do another pass without listening to the first take in your cans. Play both back and pan left and right. If you retained any ideas from take 1 for take 2, it is possible they may coincide, which will give moments of reinforcement. Some phrases could be deliberately played a couple of times if you want three or four guitars at once.
